Nestled in the remote granite hills of the northeast of Victoria, Matilda is a beautiful farmhouse where Templeton Architecture was commissioned to design a new weekend getaway. This cottage was shortlisted for the AIA 2018 Australia Residential Architecture.
The house was layered with sentiment since it is situated on the same site where the client spent his childhood. The idea was to remove the old cottage and replace it with a new dwelling that stretches out and captures the views of each bend through an appreciation of the surrounding trees.
Given the extreme weather conditions in the area, rammed earth was used for its incredible thermal mass and natural beauty. The warmth of the material and the depth of its construction grounded the project into the natural contours of the land, creating a sunken courtyard to the east.
